How to take care of your things
Our wood kitchen products require a little bit of maintenance from time to time. Here are some steps and products to help you keep your nice things looking… nice!
Caring for spoons, utensils, and boards
Never put wood kitchen items, including cutting boards and utensils, in the dishwasher. This can cause cracking and warping which can ruin your products.
Wash with warm water and mild soap after use. I use Dawn dish soap and clean with a washcloth or a non-scratch cleaning sponge.
TIP: Try not to soak your spoon or board in the sink - this will cause splitting and make everyone sad.
Dry with a clean, dry towel right after washing. Air-dry the rest of the way before storing.
Once dry, apply oil as needed. I always use Walrus Oil for any food product because the hardening wax in their oil helps seal the wood while keeping the water and bacteria out. You can also add an extra layer of Walrus Oil board wax on top for longer-lasting protection.
Depending on how often you use them, you may need to sand these products now and then. I recommend using 400 or 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper. You can usually find this in the home improvement or automotive sections of stores. After washing but before drying, gently sand your spoon or board until the surface is smooth to the touch.
Sometimes flavors and scents from cutting onions or garlic can linger on wood cutting boards. When this happens, I cut a lemon in half or pour lemon juice on and rub it over the board to help neutralize the oils. Then I wash as usual following the instructions above.
What is Walrus Oil?
From the first cutting board I made in 2018, my go-to food-safe finish has been from Walrus Oil. Since then, any product I make that comes in contact with food has Walrus Oil oil and or wax on it. Put simply, they make great products that are affordable and easy to use. They also have a mission that I believe in and am happy to help contribute towards.
